Known as Little Greece by the Bay for its Greek cafe and restaurant strip along Bay Street, this suburb sits directly on Botany Bay with a genuinely Mediterranean, holiday feel.

That beachfront position was built over former sandhills, and the ground underneath still remembers it.

Shared plumbing risers in a beachfront tower run through the same salt-laden air as everything else here, and fittings inside those risers corrode faster than the same parts would inland.

Meanwhile, the cottages that escaped redevelopment often still run older drainage fittings, simply because nobody's got around to replacing them yet.
